Background
We completed this client project in partnership with Dell Technologies to create an immersive experience for their 40th anniversary. DellQUEST aims to showcase Dell's commitment to using technology for positive impact, increase optimism and brand perception, and highlight Dell's connection to UT Austin.
Problem
Goals
Our target audience is UT students, particularly incoming freshmen that will be on campus for UT orientation. The location and audience for this experience allows us to introduce eager students to an unfamiliar campus and establish a strong impression of Dell.
To showcase Dell's commitment to innovation, we chose locations at UT that aligned with each of Dell's core principles. Each location demonstrates sustainability, community, and empowerment through technology respectively. We incorporated Dell's campaign "Welcome to Now" as the final phrase that will be unlocked by the "key" at each location.
Concept
DellQUEST is a location-based ARG scavenger hunt that introduces incoming UT students to campus and elevates Dell's brand principles. At each location, students learn more about the technology and resources on campus and Dell's connection to UT.
Onboarding
DellQUEST starts during UT freshman orientation. Students find the DellQUEST brochure in their dorm, and open it to find a cryptic message reading "WELCOME TO _____." along with a QR code.
The QR code opens the UT Orientation app and prompts students with a riddle to find the first location in their adventure.
Activations
Each location has hidden stickers shaped like the "Canted E" in Dell's logo. These stickers are image targets. When scanned with 8th Wall, it brings up an AR puzzle at that location.
By solving the puzzle, users learn more about how UT and Dell have made an impact through technology, effectively discovering one of Dell's "keys to success." Each completed location gives students a letter that will fill in the blank in "Welcome to ____."
Finale
When the AR puzzle at each location has been completed, users will be directed to the UT Tower, the centerpiece of campus. Users will have unlocked the letters "W", "O", and "N" from the locations respectively, implying that they won the game.
Upon scanning the tower, those letters are projected in AR onto the tower surface. They reverse their order to read "NOW" instead, and the rest of the phrase, "WELCOME TO" appears above, completing the original phrase.
Prototyping
I created wireframes in Figma for the game interface. Each location in the game involves an AR puzzle and links externally to an 8th Wall project where users can scan an image target to begin the AR experience.
Scan the canted E above when in 8th Wall to activate the AR minigame.
